Toothache help
Toothache? Here's what to do until you see us.
Home care can ease the pain, but it won't fix the cause. Decay, a crack or an infection needs a dentist. Untreated toothache usually gets worse and can lead to an abscess.
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the pack (children under 16 should not take aspirin).
- Adults can rinse with warm salt water. Children should not do this.
- Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food.
- Sleep with your head raised on an extra pillow to ease throbbing.
Book an urgent visit if you have
- Pain lasting more than 2 days, or not eased by painkillers
- Swollen face, cheek or jaw, fever, or a bad taste in the mouth
- Pain when biting, or red, bleeding gums
Go to the nearest hospital emergency unit straight away if swelling spreads to your eye or neck, or makes it hard to breathe, swallow or speak.
Guidance adapted from the UK NHS toothache advice.
A family practice
rooted in Accra.
Poku Memorial Dental Clinic carries forward the work of the late Dr. Francis Apiagyei Poku (“Dentist Poku”), who opened his private practice in 1973. Our aim is the same as his: good dental care delivered with patience and warmth.

Brush twice a day
Two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, morning and last thing at night. Spit, don’t rinse.

Clean between teeth
Floss or interdental brushes reach the gaps where most decay and gum disease begins.

Check-up every 6 months
Regular check-ups and cleaning catch problems early, when they are quicker and cheaper to fix.
